Accessibility
Health information should reach every person in New Ireland — including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, need larger text, or are on a slow mobile connection. This page explains what we have done and what still needs work.
Conformance statement
This website aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. Accessibility was treated as a requirement from the first line of code rather than something added at the end, and every page is built to the same pattern so that what you learn on one page carries to the next.
Getting around
Every page starts with a “Skip to main content” link, so keyboard and screen-reader users can jump past the header in one keystroke. All links, buttons and the mobile menu can be operated with the keyboard alone, and whatever you are focused on is marked with a clear, visible outline.
Structure that makes sense
Pages use real landmarks — header, navigation, main and footer — so assistive technology can move between regions. Each page carries a single main heading, with sub-headings nested in order, giving screen-reader users a reliable outline of the content.
Reading and seeing
Text and background colours were chosen to meet the AA contrast levels, and colour is never the only way meaning is carried. Images that convey information have descriptive alternative text; purely decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers so they do not add noise.
Zoom, reflow and motion
The layout reflows to a single column on narrow screens down to 320 pixels wide, and holds together at up to 200% zoom without content being cut off or requiring sideways scrolling. If your device is set to reduce motion, the gentle fade-in animations are switched off.
Built for low bandwidth
Many people in the province browse on mobile data that is slow or expensive. Pages are kept deliberately light, with very little scripting and images loaded only when needed, so the site stays usable on a weak connection.
Plain language
We write in clear, everyday English and keep links descriptive, so you can tell where a link goes from its wording alone rather than having to read the surrounding sentence.
Known limitations
We do not claim the site is perfect. There are areas we are aware of:
- Maps. The facility maps on our home, network and contact pages are drawn with a third-party mapping library over map imagery we do not control, and a map is difficult to use with a keyboard or a screen reader. For that reason every facility a map shows is also listed as plain text on the same page, so nothing is available only through the map.
- Content still being supplied. Parts of the site are waiting on details from the Authority. Sections that are not yet complete are marked as placeholders, and we will review each one for accessibility as the real content arrives.
- Documents. Files published for download may not always carry the same structure and alternative text as web pages. If a document you need is difficult to read, contact us and we will look at supplying it another way.
