New Ireland is long and narrow, and its people live along hundreds of kilometres of coastline and on outlying islands. Our facilities are arranged in tiers so that care starts close to home and steps up when a patient needs more than a village service can give.

Kavieng Provincial Hospital
The provincial referral hospital, on the Kavieng waterfront. It receives referrals from across New Ireland and is where you should go directly in an emergency.
Namatanai District Hospital
The district hospital anchoring services in the south of the province, so patients in Namatanai do not have to travel the length of the island for hospital care.

Care that follows the length of the province
New Ireland stretches more than 300 kilometres from the Kavieng tip in the north-west to the far south. A tiered network carries care down that whole spine, so distance never decides who gets help.
Kavieng Provincial Hospital
The referral hub on the waterfront at Kavieng — emergency, surgery, maternity, laboratory and pharmacy, and the place complex cases are sent for specialist care.
District hospitals
Kavieng and Namatanai districts each anchor services further from the capital, so people in the south don't have to travel the whole island for treatment.
Health centres & urban clinics
Local centres handle everyday illness, antenatal visits, immunisation and screening — the front door to the health system for most families.
Aid posts in the villages
The last mile. Aid posts and outreach patrols bring basic care, vaccines and health advice right into remote coastal and island communities.
Starting close to home, stepping up when needed
Every tier has a job. Together they mean that a person in a coastal village and a person in Kavieng town are both inside the same health system.
- Aid posts are the closest point of contact for most villages. They handle simple treatment, basic medicines, vaccination and health advice, and they are where a health worker first recognises that something is more serious.
- Health centres and urban clinics take on everyday illness, antenatal and child health visits, immunisation and screening. They can manage far more than an aid post and are the usual first stop for families living near a town or larger station.
- District hospitals serve the Kavieng and Namatanai districts, keeping inpatient and more advanced services within reach of people who live a long way from the provincial capital.
- Kavieng Provincial Hospital is the top of the provincial network — emergency, surgery, maternity, laboratory and pharmacy services, and the destination for cases that need specialist attention.
What referral means for a patient
Referral is simply the health system passing a patient upwards to the level that can help. A health worker at an aid post who cannot manage a case sends the patient on to a health centre; a health centre sends on to a district hospital; a district hospital refers to Kavieng Provincial Hospital. Where a condition needs care beyond what the province provides — complex cancer treatment, for example — the Authority arranges referral to a specialist centre outside New Ireland.
Referral also runs the other way. Once treatment is finished, patients return to their nearest facility for follow-up, medicines and recovery, so the journey home is part of the plan rather than an afterthought.
