Leaving no one behind

Care that follows the length of the province

New Ireland stretches more than 300 kilometres from the Kavieng tip in the north-west to the far south. A tiered network carries care down that whole spine, so distance never decides who gets help.

Kavieng Provincial Hospital

The referral hub on the waterfront at Kavieng — emergency, surgery, maternity, laboratory and pharmacy, and the place complex cases are sent for specialist care.

District hospitals

Kavieng and Namatanai districts each anchor services further from the capital, so people in the south don't have to travel the whole island for treatment.

Health centres & urban clinics

Local centres handle everyday illness, antenatal visits, immunisation and screening — the front door to the health system for most families.

Aid posts in the villages

The last mile. Aid posts and outreach patrols bring basic care, vaccines and health advice right into remote coastal and island communities.

Programs & partnerships

Working towards healthier islands

With partners in Papua New Guinea and abroad, NIPHA runs targeted programs to tackle the biggest threats to our people's health.

Women's health

Lukautim Meri Klinik

Our cervical cancer elimination clinic in Kavieng offers point-of-care HPV screening with same-day treatment, run in partnership with Catholic Health Services and supported by the Kirby Institute. Local clinical teams have been trained so screening keeps reaching women across the province.

First phase of the provincial cervical cancer elimination program.
Disease control

Malaria elimination

A five-year plan built with New Ireland's community-based malaria volunteers and the PNG Institute of Medical Research aims to drive down malaria across the province — combining prevention, testing, treatment and strong community involvement.

Delivered with village volunteers and PNGIMR.
Reform

One Health System

In 2016–17 the former Kavieng General Hospital and the Provincial Health Authority merged into a single unified system. Curative and public health services now plan and work together under one authority — the foundation everything else is built on.

Kavieng General Hospital became Kavieng Provincial Hospital.

Governance & leadership

Guiding the Authority

NIPHA is overseen by a provincial health board and led by an executive management team, working in line with the National Health Plan.

Board Chairlady

Dame Maria Kopkop

Chairs the New Ireland Provincial Health Board, setting the governance direction and strategic priorities of the Authority. She is at present the only woman chairing a Provincial Health Authority board anywhere in Papua New Guinea.

Chief Executive Officer

Dr Stennard Hiasihri

Heads the executive management of the Authority, with overall responsibility for clinical and public health services, partnerships, and the day-to-day running of the provincial health system.

Our guiding vision. To be known for quality health services that are affordable and accessible to all, safeguarding the physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing of the people of New Ireland — in step with the National Health Plan theme, “Leaving No One Behind.”
