Public Health Services

The directorate that works to stop people getting sick in the first place — reaching families in villages and islands right across the province.

Role & responsibilities

Public Health Services looks beyond the hospital ward to the health of whole communities. Its teams travel, vaccinate, teach and track disease so that fewer people ever need treatment.

  • Delivering immunisation for children and adults, including outreach to communities far from a fixed facility.
  • Supporting maternal and child health — antenatal care, safe delivery, newborn checks and child growth monitoring.
  • Leading malaria and other disease-control work, from prevention and testing through to community follow-up.
  • Running health promotion so people have practical, accurate information about staying well.
  • Carrying out community outreach and patrols that bring services to remote coastal and island villages.
In plain language

What this means for you

Vaccines for your family

Childhood immunisation is available through health centres and clinics, and through outreach visits to communities without a nearby facility.

Support through pregnancy

Antenatal visits, delivery support and checks for mothers and newborns are part of routine care at health centres and hospitals.

Prevention in your community

Malaria prevention, disease-control activity and health education are carried out with village volunteers and community leaders, not only inside clinics.

Where to find us

Public Health Services is based at the Kavieng Provincial Hospital facility on Nusa Parade, on the Kavieng waterfront, and its teams work out from there across both the Kavieng and Namatanai districts.

Written enquiries can be posted to P.O. Box 68, Kavieng, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, or emailed to [email protected]. General questions about any of our services can also go through the contact page.

A direct telephone line for this directorate will be published here once confirmed by the Authority.
