Curative Health Services

The directorate responsible for treating people — keeping clinical care running safely and consistently at every level of the New Ireland health network.

Role & responsibilities

Curative Health Services manages the treatment side of the Authority. Its teams look after the wards, consulting rooms and treatment areas where patients are actually seen, and they set the standards those services are held to.

  • Running clinical services day to day at the provincial hospital, the district hospitals, urban clinics, health centres and village aid posts.
  • Maintaining clinical governance — clear lines of responsibility for the decisions clinicians make and the treatment patients receive.
  • Protecting patient safety and driving quality improvement, so care gets steadily better and avoidable harm is reduced.
  • Arranging referral of complicated cases, including cancers, to specialist centres able to provide treatment beyond what the province offers.
  • Making sure essential medicines, consumables and clinical supplies reach the facilities that need them.
In plain language

What this means for you

You are seen close to home first

Your nearest aid post, health centre or urban clinic is the front door. Staff there manage common illness and injury and decide when you need more.

You are referred when you need more

When a case is beyond a local facility, clinicians move you up the network — to a district hospital, to Kavieng Provincial Hospital, or on to a specialist centre outside the province.

Care is meant to be safe and consistent

Clinical standards, supervision and quality-improvement work apply across every facility, so treatment does not depend on which door you walked through.

Where to find us

The directorate is based at the Kavieng Provincial Hospital facility on Nusa Parade, on the Kavieng waterfront. For a medical emergency, go straight to the hospital's Emergency Department rather than waiting for an appointment.

Written enquiries can be posted to P.O. Box 68, Kavieng, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, or emailed to [email protected]. General questions about any of our services can also go through the contact page.

A direct telephone line for this directorate will be published here once confirmed by the Authority.
